Ancient temples and palaces in Kerala, India, display an abounding tradition of mural paintings, mostly dating from the 9th to 12th centuries CE when this form enjoyed royal patronage. Kerala mural paintings are frescos depicting Hindu mythology in Kerala. Murals were initially painted on temple walls to experience God’s presence outside the temple. The traditional colours used in this art are red, yellow ochre, green, blue, white and black. The classic style mural art form uses natural pigments and vegetable colours. But today, the colours used are bright synthetic colours.
