The Tibetan mask was probably introduced in the 14th or 15th century by the Mongols. They were used in Central Asia and West Asia until at least the 16th century. Tibetan handicrafts are popular around the world and are made from a variety of materials, including precious metals, bamboo, and wood. Tibetan and Buddhist rituals and dances formed among the earliest such painterly references in Indian art.

The dancers use masks to depict different characters inspired by life and intended as moral instructions for the laity. Here, the masks represent an owl painted in vibrant colours. Krishna painted a series of such masks alongside portraits of the residents of this Himalayan region, introducing them to viewers in New Delhi, where the couple would settle following their extensive travels.
