Theyyam is a well known ritual art form that originated in North Kerala, and brings to life the great legends of the state. It comprises of dance, mime and music. There are almost 400 different types of Theyyam. Each artist represents a hero with great power. Performers’ faces are painted with elaborate patterns and they wear flamboyant costumes, jewellery and headgear. Performers of this dance ritual belong to various scheduled castes. Knowledge about the ritual and performance is passed on to the succeeding generation orally.
