Madhubani painting, also known as Mithila painting, is practiced in the state of Bihar and also in the Mithila region of neighboring Nepal. Although they have a folkish visual idiom, their splendid use of color and spatial composition lend them a superior aura. Of religious nature and ritualistic connotation, Madhubani paintings can trace their origin to wall paintings mentioned in Hindu oral traditions. Many other motifs and themes that derive from nature-based belief systems have been assimilated over time. Through domestic and ritual activities, women artists have been the backbone that has sustained this artistic tradition over centuries.
